GaitDem

What can gait analysis tell us about dementia and its subtypes? An integrated study of brain and behaviour

PI: Prof Lynn Rochester

BAM project members: PhD student Dr Ríona Mc Ardle (completed 2019)

Background

Identify unique signatures of gait impairment between different dementia subtypes and normal ageing using gold-standard gait analysis
Assess the feasibility of identifying unique signatures of gait impairment between different dementia subtypes and normal ageing using wearable technology in the lab and real world
Identify associations between discete cognitive domains and spatiotemporal gait characteristics

Methods

A graphic of a group of people
Assessed single and dual-task gait in the lab using an instrurmented walkway, motion capture analysis system and wearable technology
Recruited 125 people with Alzheimer's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, Parkinson's disease dementia, vascular dementia and older adult controls
Assessed gait and physical activity in the real world using a single accelerometer worn on the lower back for seven days
Conducted a comprehensive cognitive and neuropsychological assessment
